ABA Ultimate Roster Comparisons

So, here's how the rosters for the Nuggets, Pacers, Nets, and Spurs look with various values given to their ABA accomplishments:

Denver Nuggets
(Current Format - 40% ABA value)
1. Alex English - 164.4
2. David Thompson - 110.0
3. Dan Issel - 106.6
4. Carmelo Anthony - 91.4
5. Fat Lever - 70.8
(*) Dikembe Mutombo - 54.3 (higher score with Hawks)
(*) Bobby Jones - 50.7 (higher score with 76ers)
6. Larry Jones - 40.0
7. Ralph Simpson - 36.3
(*) Chauncey Billups - 34.9 (higher score with Pistons)
8. Kiki Vandeweghe - 30.2
(*) Spencer Haywood - 27.4 (higher score with ThunderSonics)
9. Nene Hilario - 26.5
10. Antonio McDyess - 22.0
(*) Allen Iverson - 19.9 (higher score with 76ers)
11. Calvin Natt - 18.5
12. Marcus Camby - 18.0

(100% ABA value)
1. Alex English - 164.4
2. David Thompson - 131.3
3. Dan Issel - 127.9
4. Larry Jones - 100.1
5. Carmelo Anthony - 91.4
6. Ralph Simpson - 91.4
(*) Bobby Jones - 57.8 (higher score with 76ers)
7. Fat Lever - 70.8
(*) Spencer Haywood - 68.6 (higher score with ThunderSonics)
(*) Dikembe Mutombo - 54.3 (higher score with Hawks)
8. Warren Jabali - 38.9
9. Mack Calvin - 35.5
10. Byron Beck - 35.0
(*) Chauncey Billups - 34.9 (higher score with Pistons)
11. Kiki Vandeweghe - 30.2
12. Nene Hilario - 26.5

So, Nuggets fans, it looks like if we increased the importance of the ABA years, you'd end up with Warren Jabali, Mack Calvin, and Byron Beck taking the places of Antonio McDyess, Calvin Natt, and Marcus Camby. (Personally, I think Camby and McDyess make it worth it to keep it as is, but if you really want to get sentimental and have to have Beck on there, that's about the only way to do it.)

Indiana Pacers
(Current Format - 40% ABA value)
1. Reggie Miller - 244.7
2. Mel Daniels - 104.6
3. Jermaine O'Neal - 101.6
4. Roger Brown - 90.9
5. George McGinnis - 71.4
6. Billy Knight - 62.4
7. Dale Davis - 57.8
8. Rik Smits - 53.0
9. Bob Netolicky - 46.5
10. Don Buse - 36.8
11. Danny Granger - 30.0
(*) Detlef Schrempf - 30.0 (higher score with ThunderSonics)
12. Vern Fleming - 26.0

(100% ABA value)
1. Mel Daniels - 261.4
2. Reggie Miller - 244.7
3. Roger Brown - 227.3
4. George McGinnis - 173.9
5. Bob Netolicky - 116.3
6. Jermaine O'Neal - 101.6
7. Billy Knight - 91.4
8. Don Buse - 63.8
9. Dale Davis - 57.8
10. Freddie Lewis - 56.6
11. Rik Smits - 53.0
12. Bill Keller - 35.4

If we take full value for ABA stats, we'd replace Danny Granger and Vern Fleming with Freddie Lewis and Bill Keller.

New Jersey Nets
(Current Format - 40% ABA value)
1. Jason Kidd - 164.9
(*) Julius Erving - 101.5 (higher score with 76ers)
2. Buck Williams - 89.3
(*) Vince Carter - 58.7 (higher score with Raptors)
3. Derrick Coleman - 40.9
4. Kerry Kittles - 30.6
5. Richard Jefferson - 30.3
(*) Rick Barry - 29.0 (higher score with Warriors)
6. Kenyon Martin - 26.8
7. Brian Taylor - 24.8
8. Bill Melchionni - 24.0
9. Kenny Anderson - 18.7
10. Stephon Marbury - 18.2
11. Mike Gminski - 17.2
12. Jayson Williams - 16.8

(100% ABA value)
(*) Julius Erving - 253.8 (still has a higher score with the Sixers)
1. Jason Kidd - 164.9
2. Buck Williams - 89.3
(*) Rick Barry - 72.6 (still has a higher score with the Warriors)
3. Brian Taylor - 62.1
4. Bill Mechionni - 59.9
(*) Vince Carter - 58.7 (higher score with the Raptors)
5. Derrick Coleman - 40.9
6. Billy Paultz - 40.3
7. Kerry Kittles - 30.6
8. Richard Jefferson - 30.3
9. Kenyon Martin - 26.8
(*) Larry Kenon - 20.4 (higher score with Spurs)
10. Kenny Anderson - 18.7
11. Stephon Marbury - 18.2
12. John Williamson - 17.3

Well, the Nets aren't going to get Dr. J, either way, so it's kind of a toss up whether they want a combo of Billy Paultz & John Williamson, or Mike Gminski & Jayson Williams.

San Antonio Spurs
(Current Format - 40% ABA value)
1. Tim Duncan - 678.1
2. David Robinson - 445.5
3. George Gervin - 278.8
4. Manu Ginobili - 182.3
5. Tony Parker - 126.4
6. Sean Elliott - 65.5
7. Alvin Robertson - 62.3
8. James Silas - 51.9
(*) Artis Gilmore - 40.9 (higher score with Bulls)
9. Bruce Bowen - 37.5
10. Larry Kenon - 36.4
11. Avery Johnson - 33.4
12. John Beasley - 28.3

(100% ABA value)
1. Tim Duncan - 678.1
2. David Robinson - 445.5
3. George Gervin - 310.1
4. Manu Ginobili - 182.3
5. Tony Parker - 126.4
6. James Silas - 96.1
7. John Beasley - 70.7
8. Sean Elliott - 65.5
9. Alvin Robertson - 62.3
10. Donnie Freeman - 53.1
11. Swen Nater - 47.5 (which would take him off of the Clippers squad)
12. Larry Kenon - 41.4

It looks like the Spurs would be giving up Bruce Bowen and Avery Johnson and replacing them with Donnie Freeman and Swen Nater if we go the 100% ABA route.

Now, pretty much all of the players that are "on the bubble" regarding how I do this list are "role players" at best - so it really doesn't make a difference to me. Personally, I think overall the rosters are stronger with the 40% value, but if my readers want to go with the 100%, I can understand where they're coming from. (I think it really screws over the Nuggets, but hey, I'm not a Nuggets fan, so... I'll deal with it.)

Discuss and let me know what you guys think.

  3. Pretty excited about this....Can't wait for some team posts...I think you should provide commentary, like you did in the beginning last time, I really enjoyed reading that...And if you think it will take too much time, you don't have to write all his achievements on a team...
